I have an LTCL (Teacher's) diploma in flute and a
postgraduate diploma in teaching. Additionally, I am a member
of the
Institute of Registered Music Teachers and registered to teach flute
and piano. For pleasure as well as professional development,
I play the flute in the Hutt Valley Orchestra.
I learnt the piano while at school but took up the flute as an
adult. Having learnt one instrument as a child and another as
an
adult, I fully understand the
needs of students at all stages of learning. The majority of my
students are young, but it is particularly rewarding when adults come
to increase their music skills.
My teaching goes back quite a few years, even back when I was a soil
scientist. When I left the workforce to have children, I
developed
my teaching by establishing a Music Studio here at my home in Lane
Street. It is a lovely light-filled airy room where it is a pleasure to
play.
Students in flute, piano and recorder have individual programmes and
play a mix of classical and popular pieces. In the main, they learn
through one on one teaching. Much of their playing is either solo or as
the
principal instrument if I am accompanying them. However, group
playing is an important part of music making. As part of
their programme, students play duets and trios. Some of this group
playing is associated with NCEA accreditation, and special coaching
takes place, as well as the opportunity for recording performances.
Student focus is helped by taking part in concerts and working towards
my Achievement
Certificates. External exams to an advanced level are
available if students wish. Theory is
included in all lessons.
